Handy essentials for travelling by plane with a baby

Frequently asked questions about flying with a baby

How can I help my baby equalise the pressure on a plane?
The best way to help your baby equalise the pressure during take-off and landing is to breastfeed them, give them a bottle or let them suck on a dummy. Swallowing helps to relieve the pressure in their ears, reducing discomfort and helping to prevent earache.

Which toys are best for the plane?
Compact, quiet toys with no loose parts that cannot roll away and will not disturb other passengers are ideal for air travel. Washable sensory books, small fine motor toys, teething rings and crinkle books are all excellent choices. They will keep your baby entertained while taking up very little space in your hand luggage.

What essentials should I pack in my hand luggage for my baby?
Pack plenty of nappies, wet wipes and a compact travel changing mat, along with a change of clothes for both you and your baby. It is also worth bringing a lightweight blanket, as cabin air conditioning can be quite cool and babies can get cold quickly.

Can I take baby food and liquids onto the plane?
Yes, baby food, expressed breast milk, water and unsweetened tea for use during the journey are exempt from the usual 100 ml hand luggage restriction. Place any bottles, pouches or jars separately at security so they can be checked quickly.

What is the best way and place to change my baby's nappy on the plane?
Most planes have a fold-down changing table in at least one of the toilets. As space is very limited, it is best to pack a small nappy bag or wet bag with only the essentials, including a nappy, wet wipes and a compact changing mat, so everything is easy to reach.
