7th Week of Pregnancy
A little sparkling treasure
The era of paddle-like limbs
A warm welcome to week 7 of your pregnancy. ❤️
Your baby is now going through a real growth spurt and measures around 7 to 10 millimetres in length. The earlier comparison to a sequin no longer applies. Your baby is now about the size of a sparkling crystal from an earring or a small individual LEGO brick (a 1x1 brick).
Although still very small, your baby is already like a ‘supercomputer’, quietly carrying out remarkable developmental processes.
Your baby’s development: brainpower and little paddle-like limbs
Your baby is beginning to look less like a C as the back gradually straightens. The most notable developments include:
- The super-brain: Around 100,000 new nerve cells are formed every minute. The brain is already divided into the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.
- Paddle-like hands: The arm buds continue to lengthen, and flat ‘paddles’ are forming at the ends. These will soon develop into fingers, although they are still connected by webbing at this stage.
- The face becomes more defined: The tip of the nose becomes visible, and the eyelids begin to form, although they remain closed.
Your body: an emotional rollercoaster
You may feel as though you are on an emotional rollercoaster this week. This is due to the interplay of oestrogen and progesterone. It is entirely normal to become tearful at small things or to feel irritated by minor issues.
Your body is working intensively. Blood volume is increasing to support the womb more effectively, which may cause you to become short of breath more quickly or notice a slightly faster heartbeat at times.
A moment of well-being: time for small rituals
As your baby is now about the size of a sparkling crystal earring, this can be a lovely moment to introduce a small ritual. You might consider buying a notebook, sometimes called a ‘miracle diary’, in which to record your thoughts.
Your guide to the 7th week of pregnancy
When can the umbilical cord be seen on an ultrasound scan?
By the 7th week of pregnancy, the umbilical cord has already formed and supplies your baby with nutrients from the placenta. On a high-resolution ultrasound scan, it can often be seen as a thin connection between the embryo and the wall of the womb.
Can I still have a bath in the 7th week of pregnancy?
Yes, you can. A warm bath can be very relaxing, particularly if you are experiencing back pain or stress. Ensure that the water temperature does not exceed 38 degrees to avoid placing strain on your circulation. A bath additive containing lavender may be especially soothing at this stage.
Why do I get headaches so often in the first trimester?
Hormonal changes and increased blood volume can lead to more frequent headaches in early pregnancy. Try to drink enough water and spend short periods in the fresh air regularly. If the pain becomes severe, consult your doctor before taking any medication, including mild pain relief such as paracetamol.
Do I need to start looking for a midwife now?
Yes. In many areas, midwives are booked well in advance. As they provide support both during pregnancy and after birth, it is advisable to arrange an initial meeting at this stage, especially if you are experiencing discomfort.
Can I still dye my hair whilst pregnant?
This remains a topic of debate. Many experts recommend caution during the sensitive phase of organ development, which continues until around the 12th week. If you choose to dye your hair, consider using natural, plant-based products or opting for highlights, where the dye does not come into direct contact with the scalp.
